Content Inside: Women in political decision-making positions Facts and figures 2000 2 About 80 years ago women secured for themselves the right to vote and the r ig ht to hold political of f ice in most Euro- pean countries. Since then they have been pre s e nt in parlia me nt s go v e r n me nt s a nd public bodie s but unde r re p re s e nt e d. Although this imbalanced representation of women and men in politics conflicts with fundamental democratic principles there is still no equal participation of women in political decision-making processes. This brochure contains: facts and fig u res about the involveme nt of women in the decision-making pro- cess in the ins t i t u t io ns of the Euro p e a n Union as well as in national regional and local parliaments committees and governments of the EU Member States and the EU Economic Area ( EEA ); an overview of equal opportunities policy in the European Union and examples of strategies which can bring about the balanced participation of women and men in leading political positions. 3 me nt for women and men in EU Me m b e r States (e.g. equal opportunities for access to employment and vocational training social security self-employ- ment and protection for pregnant women in the workplace). The European Court of Justice has de- veloped legislation which makes direct and indirect gender discrimination unlawful in all the legal systems of Member States. Since the beginning of the 1980s the E u ropean Commission has been org a n i s - ing action programmes to promote equal opportunities. Whereas in the first two programmes the emphasis was on equal opportunities at work the 3rd Medium-Term Action Programme has recognized the importance of the active participation of women in poli- tical decision-making processes for equal opportunities policies.
