This has a been a consistent finding over many studies (Boice 1992 Fink 1984 1988 Reis 1997 Sorcinelli 1992). As participants in one early-career workshop said: "My number one issue is to learn how to do more in less time and work more effectively because I literally work all of the time. My health has really suffered because of it" or "One of the biggest challenges is juggling teaching research and service" (Solem and Foote 2004 894). In working with early career faculty asking about schedules deadlines and time pressures usually gives me a clearer picture of how well they are doing than does asking them to recount recent accomplishments or setbacks. Early career faculty who describe their schedules and deadlines matter-of-factly and seem comfortable balancing the demands of a variety of projects seem to find the path toward tenure a smoother journey. Those reporting acute levels of stress over deadlines and great difficulties in balancing day-to-day professional responsibilities are those that benefit the most from help and coaching. One of the problems in finding help is that much research and advice about time management is aimed at those in the world of business rather than academics. There are a range of "how to" guides available in the self-help or business section of most bookstores (Hindle 1999 Morgenstern 2000 Davidson 2001).
