Content Inside: Thesis: Three Essays in Economic History by Tomas Cvrcek Chapter 1 of my thesis is my job market paper. Chapter 2 has already been accepted for publication by Economics and Human Biology. The third chapter is almost complete and has appeared (or is scheduled to appear) at conferences in Europe and the US. All three share a common focus at the interconnection between economic and political developments and personal welfare. Chapter 1 Mothers Wives and Workers: The Dynamics of White Fertility Marriage and Womens Labor Supply in the United States 1870 1930 The sweeping changes in women's role in the U.S. in the 20th century have their origin in the 1870- 1930 period. This was a time when the patterns of women's labor supply and marriage changed profoundly. While fertility fell throughout the period the marriage rate first declined then around 1900 picked up again. Mirroring these changes the mean age at marriage increased up until 1890 but declined thereafter. At the same time American women became a growing presence on the labor market: first while single then increasingly after 1900 as married women. I develop and calibrate a model which jointly explains labor market and marriage and fertility behavior during this period. New marriages are formed within a bargaining framework in which men make marriage proposals to women specifying their desired number of children the manner in which household resources will be divided and the extent of the (potential future) wifes labor supply. The men are assumed to get a disutility from the wifes work. Faced with a proposal women either take it or leave it. Their opportunity cost of marriage depends on whether or not they work while single. Since work generates independent income working single women have a stronger bargaining position in the marriage market than non-working women and they are therefore able to demand more in terms of household resources in marriage.
