The Emergence of Social Entrepreneurship and the Rise of the Citizen Sector Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed its the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead TORONTO, On March 23rd, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. the 2005 Hart House Lecture presents David Bornstein in the Great Hall. His Lecture entitled, So You Want to Change the World? The Emergence of Social Entrepreneurship and the Rise of the Citizen Sector will examine the rise of this global trend. Like business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs are dedicated, resourceful and savvy. Whereas business entrepreneurs strive for profit and market share, their social counterparts focus on humanitarian goals like eradicating poverty, improving healthcare and disaster relief. The growth of millions of new citizen-led organizations is redefining how societies are addressing problems from environmental threats to health crises to educational needs to poverty. Despite having all the advantages, governments have failed to deal with social problems. Ironically, it is the poor but motivated social entrepreneurs who can boast of success in helping Bangladeshi women break out of the cycle of poverty, bringing electricity to rural Brazil, helping thousands of low-income American high-school students get into college and developing healthcare policy to combat AIDS in South Africa. David Bornstein will show how the principles of social entrepreneurship are applicable worldwide. He will discuss the opportunities available to us in this exciting time of change and give us practical insights about how we can build a better world.
