Content Inside: Rural Entrepreneurship in South Dakota: A Listening Session on ProgramsStrategies and Possibilities Appreciative Inquiry The 4-D Model Cooperrider et al. (2000) Mary Emery Associate DirectorNorth Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD) explains the process of using Appreciative Inquiry in the Entrepreneurship Listening Session held in Chamberlain SD in February 2006. The process allowed participants to use the 4-D model: Discover Dream Design and Destiny to think about the future of entrepreneurship in rural communities in South Dakota. Kellogg Foundation First Dakota National Bank Yankton SD Great Western Bank Watertown SD SDSU Entrepreneur Program The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development has been holding Listening Sessions throughout the region in 2005-2006 to gather ideas related to rural entrepreneurship. Using Appreciative Inquiry participants were asked to discover what is working well to dream what it would look like if we could do better and to design strategies to bridge from where we are now to where it can work even better. The next step for participants is to focus on the destiny stage by planning follow up action in South Dakota. Listening Sessions have also occurred in Minnesota North DakotaWisconsin Indiana Illinois and Missouri. Participants interviewed each other to discover examples of how entrepreneurship is working in rural South Dakota.
