Content Inside: 82 Japan aktuell 3/2006 Debatte Research in Economics and Economic History on Japan: Current Problems and New Trends Janet Hunter Preamble It is a great honour and pleasure to be able to thank the organisers of this workshop for their kind invitation to speak on this occasion and to congratulate the Institute of Asian Affairs on its anniversary. I wish it every success in the future. We have already heard colleagues in political science and international re- lations express concerns about the study of Japan not being integrated with developments in theory subject to methodological constraints and suffering from an insufficient recognition of the advantages of multidisciplinarity. In this context there are perhaps some advantages in approaching the topic of economics as an economic historian. Economic history is a field of study that is both inherently multidisciplinary and embraces the utilisation of a range of methodologies to study a specific empirical phenomenon. The dichotomy between theoretical and empirical work that has already been identified as a problem in some areas of Japanese studies is resolved by using theories and models in an instrumental way as means of sorting and analysing information and asking appropriate questions. They thus provide the yardstick for comparisons across national entities. In my own department all area specialists are integrated into an explicitly comparative social science approach. This integration of Japan into the mainstream however remains the exception rather than the rule. General Observations I would like to start by making three general observations. Firstly many social science disciplines have suffered from the tyranny of contemporary priorities and short term imperatives over recent years but none perhaps more than economics.
