Content Inside: The University of Texas at Austin Digitization Center April 2004 1 Quality Control What it is and How to do it? Quality control is an integral component of the digitization project. It assures that the digital objects are of the best possible quality. Quality Control helps us maintain the highest possible accuracy and consistency of the digitization process and the digital objects themselves. Sometimes there is some confusion between Quality Control and Quality Assurance; the former usually refers to the vendor or the in-house inspection conducted during production while the later refers to the inspection of the final products before delivery. Here we refer to both actions as Quality Control. The process of color correction (adjusting the digital objects colors to these of the original) is described in a separate document. Controlled images should be inspected while viewing at 200% magnification or higher along with the original in hand for direct comparison! It is always recommended to go back and forth between 100% and higher levels. The Digitization Center uses Adobe Photoshop as the primary imaging software for quality control. Things to look for during visual inspection 1 (see examples): Image is not the correct size Image is not the correct resolution File name is incorrect File format is incorrect Image is in incorrect color mode (i.e. colored image has been scanned in grayscale mode) Loss of detail in highlight or shadows Overall view of image is too light or too dark Uneven tonal values Lack of sharpness or excessive sharpening Pixellation (individual pixels are apparent to a viewer) Presence of digital artifacts (such as very regular straight lines across an image) Moir patterns (wavy lines or swirls usually found in areas where there are repeated patterns as half-tone dots).
