At the Ann Arbor Area Chamber we keep you informed about the government issues that impact business and we represent you on these issues. For this issue of B2B we asked our elected officials at the city county and state level to respond to a set of questions. You should know where they stand and what they are doing on your behalf. No. It creates winners (property owners) and losers (renters) and has not proven to help munic- ipalities significantly. For example Grand Rapids has an income tax and about the same property tax millage level Ann Arbor would have were an income tax to be approved. Grand Rapids has enacted deep service cuts in order to balance their budget in these tough fiscal times. What services should businesses located within the city limits expect from the 6.23 mill general operating property tax millage they pay (or pay indirectly via rent)? Less than 30 percent of property taxes go to support all A2 city services. Nonetheless Ann Arbor offers its taxpayers a high level of services. Maintaining a high quality of life a lively downtown great parks etc. is important to both residents and businesses. We are determined to keep the city clean and safe despite the statewide funding crisis for local governments and rising crime across S.E. Michigan. The citys ongoing efficiency drive has so far reduced the bureaucracy by nearly 20 percent for a savings of over $8.5 million per year while preserving services. There ha ...
