Content Inside: Putting technologies to work for remote problem solving Geraldine Fitzpatrick Interact Lab Department of Informatics University of Sussex Brighton UK BN1 9QH +44 1273 678982 g.a.fitzpatrick@sussex.ac.uk ABSTRACT In this position paper I overview two healthcare-related studies and two studies involving access to sales experts to draw out issues for discussion around technological support for remote problem solving. INTRODUCTION My interests in this workshop on Giving help at a distance: Ubiquitous computing to support remote problem solving are generally around problem solving as a collaborative interactive process and the work to put technologies to work 1 to support remote problem solving. These interests are based on the following experiences. Remote Consultation with Intensive Care Unit Experts The first project/study took place over an 18 month period during which clinicians across three intensive care units (ICUs) were connected by a telehealth service using off-the- shelf video-conferencing technologies in combination with data sharing made possible by the scanning in of relevant documents 1. The telehealth situation in this study involved the ICUs at three hospitals. One was a tertiary centre in a metropolitan city the other two regional hospitals were at sites hundreds of kilometers away from the tertiary centre. A unique feature of this project was that it was initiated owned and driven by the clinicians themselves. For the study data was gathered over an 18-month period using a range of qualitative and survey techniques that covered both the early stages of the project and the post-deployment period. Intensive care telehealth is concerned with making clinical expertise usually sited in a metropolitan tertiary hospital more widely available to less well resourced regional hospitals.
