Purpose Burnett Shire Council recognises that it must present a profile to the public and has a responsibility to its ratepayers for providing comment advice and opinion on Local Government policies and decisions. Ways and means of doing this involve Media Releases Speeches Media Alerts Council Initiated Special Events Australia Day and Queensland Day Celebrations Publication Production Displays Shire Decorations Citizenships etc. Generally these services will be provided in-house but Consultants may be engaged where it is considered such services would better portray the Council's operations. 2. Application MEDIA 1. To improve and enhance Council's profile it is necessary that media contact be limited to people identified within this Policy. 2. Such streamlining will not only provide a more efficient system for releasing correct statements to the media but also provide the media with the correct protocol to obtain those statements. 3. Councillors may make personal public comment to the media on any issue provided due regard is paid to Council's "Code of Conduct - Elected Members Management and Staff" and the requirements of the Local Government Act 1993. 4. The Chief Executive Officer or his nominee shall release media statements only on matters of approved policy or at the Chief Executive Officers discretion on issues of direct benefit to the Council as a whole. 5. All media statements will be issued under the hand of the Mayor Deputy Mayor or Chief Executive Officer except under the following circumstances:- (a) The Chief Executive Officer may issue statements on behalf of the Mayor at the discretion of the abovementioned as an official spokesperson. (b) The Chief Executive Officer may issue statements on behalf of the Mayor or Deputy Mayor in their absence ...
