But traditional perspectives on this subject overlook individuals such as political or religious activists whose products are not sold in traditional markets. A more expansive view considers actions which transform ideas into enterprises that generate intellectual social cultural religious or economic value. Together we will use theory data case studies and guest speakers to investigate what it means to be an entrepreneur and what characterizes the entrepreneurial society. Readings There are three required books for the course which are available at the bookstore and at most any online bookstore. Baumol William J. 2002. The Free-Market Innovation Machine. Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press. De Soto Hernando. 2000. The Mystery of Capital. New York: Basic Books. Jaffe Adam B. and Josh Lerner. 2004. Innovation and Its Discontents. Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press. Other readings are available on e-reserves through the library. The required books will be placed on 24-hour reserve as well. Additional readings will be provided by the instructor. Course Requirements Class Participation To ensure the success of the seminar attendance is required at all sessions. For each class session I will ask you to turn in at the beginning of class a 1-2 page response paper based on the readings. I will give you a question or set of questions that you can use to guide your response paper. Class participation will count toward 30 percent of your grade.
