Content Inside: The Food Production Challenge -Working Within Ecosystems We are experiencing a steady decline in the area of land that is capable of food production. The population is expected to increase by 50% by 2050. During that same time period demand for food is expected to grow at an even faster rate (100%) than population growth due to rising standards of living. To double our food supply in a sustainable way without further loss and degradation of our soil will be a huge challenge. We must continue to develop and apply our scientific knowledge and skills for the protection of our food land ecosystem. First we must understand our role in the ecosystem and decide on some possible solutions. Can you accept this challenge? Can you recommend ways to rapidly increase production of quality food? Document Overview Groups of students will be arranged on five teams to tackle the above challenge. Each team will have one project to complete. They will need to work as a team in partners and alone to complete the challenge. Their goal is to become familiar with the research and then to recommend what would work best for increasing food production in a sustainable way for future generations. The projects consist of answering these questions: FOOD PRODUCTION AND SOIL MANAGEMENT This document contains information for 5 research projects for grade seven presented in a Project/Problem-Based Learning approach. The students assume the role of a research scientist to respond to the Food Production Challenge- Working Within Ecosystems. Project or problem based learning is focused experiential learning (minds-on hands- on) organized around the investigation and resolution of messy real-world problems. It integrates disciplines constructs knowledge fosters active learning and connects learning and real life. Is water management important? Why do we add nutrients to the soil? How do we help the ecosystem by growing crops sustainably? How do we keep soils healthy and produc ...
