The auto industry must minimize driver distraction by leveraging innovative technologies to meet customer needs and legislative requirements. NEWS ANALYSIS Event On 20 April 2006, the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) released the results of their 100-Car Naturalistic Driving Study. The study used video and sensors to track drivers of 100 vehicles. Data was gathered on crashes and near-crashes and contributing circumstances. The results indicated that cell phones are the most common driver distraction and cause a threefold increase in the risk of a crash or near-crash.
