Read the following text silently or aloud: Henry Ford, the son of an Irish immigrant farmer, was born in Greenfield Village near Dearborn, Michigan on July 30, 1863. He attended a one-room school, but he didnt enjoy school or the life on the farm. He left school when he was 16 and went to work in a machine shop in Detroit. He became the chief engineer of the Detroit Illuminating Company. On his hours away from his job, Henry did some experimenting. He worked on building his own horseless carriage with a gasoline engine. He finally succeeded in 1896 by building a quadricycle which had four bicycle wheels. In 1903 he started the Ford Motor Company which began making the Model T. They were built one at a time and each one took 14 hours to make. Henry Ford had the idea that by using the way some other industries worked, he could speed up production. Some other industries were using standardized parts and assembly lines. In 1913, Ford began using these methods in the building of the Model T. Eventually, the Model T could be made in 1 hour and 33 minutes. The price of the Model T went from $1000 in 1908 to $360 in 1916. By 1914, however, the workers building the cars were unhappy. Standing in the assembly line and doing the same job over and over was boring. Many workers were quitting.
