Content Inside: Spring 2006 Economics 5430/6430: Asian Economic History & Development Reynolds FAMB 201 Focus: is on members of ASEAN and the East Asian NICs. Prerequisite: Principles of Economics. Office hours: by appt in OSH 205 (Ph: 581-8620) and before/after class. Class hours: W 7:15p-9:45p. Course objectives: be able to identify major themes diversity and commonalities among Asian nations economic histories (through narrative description theory and empirical analysis) and explain the implica- tions for contemporary Asian global and US economies. Themes: the role of culture and resources in early Asian economic history; non indigenous impacts and indigenous response e.g. impact and response to early Indian and Chinese influence and early European imperialism; impact and response to European industrialization / late imperialism; decolonization economic nationalism and isolated industrialization; population growth and agricultural development; embrace of the global economy growth crisis growth. Texts: none other than the Reserve Readings in Marriott Library listed for each class session. Final Grade: Optional Midterm-25%; 15 page Research Paper-50%; Final -25% or 50% if better than midterm. Each student will schedule three individual meetings with the instructor: the first to discuss a brief outline of the students paper an initial literature search and further search strategies; the second to discuss a detailed outline paper organization and working bibliography; and the third to discuss a draft of the research paper. Papers will follow American Economic Review style conventions. This class meets the CW (communications/writing) graduation requirement of the University. You may register for Econ 3905 in order to receive additional consultation in paper preparation and 1 additional student credit hour. --No make-up exams will be given regardless of reason except when required under University regulations.
