What Are the Benefits of High School Career/Technical Studies? s Academic Benefits Career/technical teachers who often require students to use academic knowledge and skills in completing assignments increase students chances of meeting the High Schools That Work reading mathematics and science performance goals by seven to 10 percent (2000 High Schools That Work Assessment). 1 q Students who complete the HSTW- recommended academic core and a career concentration: x have average reading mathematics and science scores that equal or exceed those of college-preparatory students on the HSTW Assessment; x continue their studies after high school at a higher rate than students who do not complete an upgraded academic core and a concentration; and x have a higher grade point average in college and are more likely than other high school graduates to remain in college throughout the first year. s Employment and Earnings Benefits (Boesel Hudson Deich and Masten 1994) q High school students who complete a concentration of three or four credits in a career/technical field of study have better employment and earnings out- comes than students who complete fewer than two credits in a single career/techni- cal field. q Career/technical graduates who obtain jobs in their fields of study outperform their peers who are employed in areas unrelated to their areas of study. q Female high school graduates who com- plete concentrations in business or health have better employment outcomes than females wh ...
