White Department of Economics New Jersey Hall 301c Rutgers University 732-932-7486 white@economics.rutgers.edu Office hours: Mondays 11-12 and Fridays 1-2 or by appointment Prerequisites Economics 203 (Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis) Economics 204 (Intermediate Macroeconomic Analysis) and Economics 322 (Econometrics) Course Objective This course examines long term economic growth and its determinants in Western Europe. After surveying the trends in growth the course focuses on the agricultural and industrial revolutions the growth and financing of government the evolution of financial systems and the development and prospects of the European Union. Attendance Policy While attendance is not required you are strongly advised to attend every class as attendance is highly correlated with performance on tests. Please do not arrive late to class. If you need to leave early you must inform me and sit near the door. Course Requirements 1. Mid-Term Exam (25 percent) Oct 20 2. Research Paper Due (40 percent) December 1. (No later than September 22 you must come to my office to discuss a paper topic. On October 27 you must deliver a one page summary of your topic and a short bibliography---this is worth 5 of the 40 percent.) 3.
