Content Inside: The Challenge of Completely Ethical CI and the CHIP Model Darren Charters University of Waterloo As published in Competitive Intelligence Review vol. 12 no. 3 Third Quarter 2001 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This article examines difficulties that are present for competitive intelligence practitioners endeavoring to conduct ethical CI. It explores the basic schools of ethical thought and combines them to create a model for evaluating the ethics of potential competitive intelligence activities. It concludes by suggesting that using rigorous ethical evaluation in assessing CI activities does not have to sacrifice the competitive position of an organization. I NTRODUCTION Is competitive intelligence conducted ethically? Most CI practitioners believe other practitioners engage in unethical competitive intelligence activities (Cohen and Czepiec 1988 p. 202). More recent anecdotes suggest the continued existence of unethical CI activities (Penenberg and Barry 2000). Can effective successful competitive intelligence be conducted ethically? The Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) takes the position that it can. In SCIPs Code of Ethics it expressly states that competitive intelligence practitioners should avoid all unethical practices. All SCIP members agree to try and conduct CI in a completely ethical manner. What is completely ethical CI? That is not so clear. Ideally CI practitioners would consider their personal ethical mores the general principles expressed in SCIPs Code of Ethics and a corporate policy to answer the question. Even with these aids it may not be clear whether a contemplated CI action would be completely ethical. Unfortunately CI practitioners are frequently without a corporate policy may be unable to extrapolate from the general statement of principles in SCIPs Code of Ethics and only have a crudely developed personal sense of why certain CI actions feel unethical.
