Deforestation depletion of ozone global warming air and water pollution acid rain loss of fish population and the loss of animal species are but a few of the increasing number of environmental problems that we face. The need to address these problems has become increasing urgent as countries grow and populations increase. Many environmental problems have an economic component and all environmental policies have an economic component. This course is about these problems and the policies to address them. This course surveys major themes in the environmental economics with an emphasis on three aspects; analysis evidence and some case studies. Knowledge of introductory microeconomics is required and that of intermediate microeconomic is recommended. Requirements are a take-home midterm exam a take-home final exam and several problem sets during the semester. Also class attendance and participation will carry a weight of about 5 percent of the overall course score. Sources will consist of the following two textbooks. The first one is required and the second one is consulted sporadically and need not be purchased. Those sections of this book that are cited will be available on electronic reserve at the library. In addition some (but not all) of the lecture notes as well as some other material will be available on electronic reserve. Required: Jonathan M.
