Content Inside: C ONNECTED BY 25: FINANCING Entrepreneurship Programs FOR YOUTH TRANSITIONING OUT OF FOSTER CARE FINANCING Entrepreneurship Programs FOR YOUTH TRANSITIONING OUT OF FOSTER CARE Barbara Hanson Langford and Margaret Flynn-Khan with Rachel Sherman March 2007 1 C ONNECTED BY 25: This publication is one of a series of briefs exploring strategies for financing supports and services that help youth in foster care make successful transitions to adulthood. The Finance Project pro- duced this brief with support from the Foster Care Work Group. The Foster Care Work Group (FCWG) is one of three work groups of the Youth Transition Funders Group (YTFG) a collaboration of foundation lead- ers dedicated to improving the lives of the nations most vulnerable young people. Foundation leaders partici- pating in the YTFG are committed to achieving a common visionensuring that vulnerable youth are con- nected by age 25 to institutions and support systems that will enable them to succeed throughout adulthood. The FCWG brings together foundation leaders with a shared interest in preparing youth in foster care for their transition out of the child welfare system and providing them pathways to lifelong economic well-being. In March 2004 the FCWG with assistance from The Finance Project created Connected by 25:A Plan for Invest- ing in Successful Futures for Foster Youth. Connected by 25 made the case for and outlined a bold agenda for foun- dation and government investment in helping youth in foster care become successful adults. An important premise of Connected by 25 is that as public child welfare systems grapple with their mandate to provide pro- tection for all children in their care preparation for independence and adulthood is often given too little atten- tion.
