Introduction For many years Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has sought to become the premier urban inte- grated system in the nation. At its inception that vision was audacious viewed by many as completely unat- tainable. Years later significant work remains. But it is also true that a focus on equity and student success cou- pled with unwavering commitment and hard work by many people and agencies has brought us to excellence in many ways. The goal of being the premier urban system no longer seems audacious. Instead over the past decade many national experts and observers have singled out CMS as one of the best school districts in America. Some examples: In 2002 CMS was one of four school districts across the country recognized by the Council of the Great City Schools for improving academic achievement and narrowing the achievement gap.
