Office Phone: 361-6073 Home Phone: 364-6948 (Calls welcome at reasonable hours.) e-mail: burnettj@wabash.edu In this class we will learn both economics and history. The events of history will help us to better understand and evaluate economic theory and economic theory will help us to better understand history. We will learn the importance of economic institutions. The study of history will teach us important lessons about todays economic policies and institutions. This class is organized by topic rather than chronologically. The material we study later in the course may have happened earlier in time. This course will focus on four main topics: growth labor money and government. There are many areas of economic history that I have not included in the syllabus but I have left two days at the end to study an extra topic chosen by the class. Goals of the Course 1. Apply economic theory to help us better understand US history. 2. Use the events of US history to test economic theory. 3. Introduce you to some of the important debates in the field of economic history. 4. Improve your reading writing thinking and speaking skills. 5. Practice quantitative analysis. Texts Purchase the following texts: Jeremy Atack and Peter Passell A New Economic View of American History Second Edition (New York: Norton 1994) Peter Temin Lessons from the Great Depression (Cambridge Mass.: MIT Press 1989) There is also a packet available in the bookstore.
