One reason is that it helps satisfy my sense of curiosity. It tells me how and why the world as I know it came to be the way they are. In addition it helps satisfy my thirst for stories and adventure. Like mythology and great fiction economic history is about epic stories; stories in which the setting is larger than life. There is both personal drama; people responding to challenges with the both failure and success possible. There is also the greater than thou; a sense that something very large - the shape of human society itself - is at stake. Economic History has the elements of great fiction and more. Fiction or not one has to believe that within a setting the story is possible. One of the worst things that can happen is for a story to lose its credibility. Economic history maintains its feeling of awe because it never loses its sense of believability. It is based on what really happened. Economic history doesnt just stir ones emotions and passions. Its multi-facetted nature challenges and stirs the intellect. Economic historians while (usually) not historians need a good grasp of the history or they can end up analyzing something other than reality. In addition economic historians need the analytical framework of economics to help explain the why behind economic changes. Narrow? Not economic history. Forget reality TV! Its time for economic history! Welcome to true excitement!
