Content Inside: Doing An Management Consulting Job Search Overview of the Industry Many changes are occurring in consulting firms as they respond to economic conditions but the positive news now is that corporations are profitable in almost every industry and consultants are in high demand. For several years consulting firms have sought out talented students beyond those in MBA programs. They look to engineering departments law schools even to social sciences and humanities graduate programs. The structure of most firms resembles that of law firms and investment banks: entry-level professionals who perform the work and have client contact; senior consultants principals or vice presidents who have responsibility for managing work on an engagement or project and who also have some responsibility for selling or cross-selling services; And partners or vice presidents whose primary responsibilities are to sell business and manage top-level relationships. Essentially consulting firms are involved in selling a project to a client most often a Fortune 500 type or large government organization staffing the right team (usually four to six people for an average strategy engagement but many more for a large implementation project) analyzing the clients problem (which may be framed as a different problem than the client has presented) presenting findings and getting client approval for implementation identifying key company staff for the implementation team rolling out and managing the communication of changes working with the company to integrate the changes.
