Content Inside: Claudia Jordan November 5 2006 ITEC 860 Building Motivation into Online Education of 5 Building Motivation into Online Education The Internet has become a popular delivery route for distance learning. Even with the capacity to reach a large audience and make learning widely accessible dropout rates for online education range between 30% and 50% (Moore & Kearsley 2005). While currently that figure tends to be at the lower end of the range keeping distance learners motivated would likely contribute to reducing the dropout rate and making online education more effective. One way to improve motivation in adult distance learners is to provide them with organized accessible and clear information (Davis 1993). With that goal in mind this white paper addresses the following questions: What is motivation? What role does motivation play in online education? And what information design techniques can be applied to motivate distance learners? What is motivation? Motivation is defined as a persons degree of willingness to act toward a goal (University of Kentucky 2006) and can be categorized into two types: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation refers to a persons internal thought processes like curiosity achievement and truth. Goals focus on improving understanding and increasing knowledge. Extrinsic motivation refers to external rewards like bonuses promotions and recognition. Rewards focus on the physical world and material things that can be seen and touched. Motivation relates to personal need as described in Maslows five-level hierarchy. The first four needs (physiological safety love and esteem) are often referred to as deficiency needs because they motivate people to act only when they are unmet.Self actualization the fifth need by contrast is often called a growth need because people constantly strive to satisfy it.
