Content Inside: April is Automotive Career Month and National Car Care Month , and the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) is celebrating both California’s drivers and those who repair their vehicles by participating in several events around the State. How about a career in the auto industry? Men and women have the opportunity to find rewarding and exciting careers in today’s automotive industry. The Schwarzenegger Administration recognizes the importance of Career Technical Education (CTE) for California, and has increased funding for it. At a recent CTE Summit, Victoria Bradshaw, Secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, stated that the automotive industry, along with infrastructure/construction, manufacturing, and health care will have the highest demands for skilled workers by the year 2014. There are many careers in the automotive industry, such as Auto Repair Technician, Auto Body Technician, and Automotive Electrician. Below are some resources for those who want to begin an automotive career and for those who are already working in the industry. Where can I go to obtain basic or advanced automotive training? BAR’s Web site has a statewide database listing of BAR-certified schools and colleges that provide basic and advanced automotive courses. To find out about a college or institution near you, go to www.smogcheck.ca.gov , click on “Technicians and Stations” on the left side of the page, and then click on “Technicians.” While there, you can even learn how your VA benefits can pay for automotive training. You can also find out about how to become a licensed technician for Lamp, Brake, or Smog Check on BAR’s home page. The Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with manufacturers, new car dealers, and the State Department of Education for school-to-work automotive training for entry level or advanced studies in automotive technology.
