All rights reserved. www.usatodayeducation.com K-122003-0X Aeronautics Series: Part II News from Flight Industry and Technology Sectors Since September 11, 2001, fewer Americans are flying and commercial airlines are paying the price. Although major airlines have benefited from U.S. Government assistance, they now face a situation where cutting costs no longer suffices to ensure their survival. In addition, the public eye did not look kindly upon air travel as the nation prepared for war with Iraq. After months of appeal to Congress, the airlines finally received a much- needed federal bailout package to keep the industry functioning. Given the state of todays economy, though, the financial future of even some of the top airlines remains a question. However, experts are seeing signs of a turnaround. They point to a tomorrow where the economy spurs public confidence in flight. This case study explores the challenges the airline industry has recently faced, and how the resilience of American air travel has begun to meet them.
