In the afterglow of this conciliatory get-together between heads of state still officially at war there has been extensive speculation in East Asiaand especially in the ROKabout the sorts of diplomatic formulas that might permit North and South Korea to move toward a peace treaty (finally ending the Korean War) and there- after to a deepening economic and political integration that would finally culminate in peaceful and vol- untary reunification. But if one is to contemplate the prospect of an eventual Korean unification one must consider not only the policies and negotiating frameworks that might one day bring the Korean peo- ple back together but also the disparities in socio-economic development that separate them today. To approach discussion of an eventual reintegration or reunification of the two Koreas in a practi- cal fashion indeed it is absolutely essential to have some sense of the starting points for this prospective journey.
