Content Inside: MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP Minister for the Environment and Water Resources T70/07 22 May 2007 $9.8 MILLION INVESTMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS AND WATER MANAGEMENT The Australian Government will invest $9.8 million into economic and scientific research to help address Australias major environmental and water challenges Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Malcolm Turnbull announced today. Mr Turnbull said $7 million would be used to establish an Environmental Economics Research Hub through the Australian Governments $100 million Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities (CERF) Programme. With this announcement today $43.6 million of the $60 million CERF national component has now been committed with the $40 million for the Marine and Tropical Research Facility being committed annually over 4 years. Mr Turnbull also announced that further $2.8 million would fund another seven projects from the Australian Governments Raising National Water Standards Programme. These projects will maximise the use of science data and modeling techniques to improve water management in rural regional and urban Australia. CERF is one of the Australian Governments key environmental research programmes. It fosters research into current and emerging environmental challenges bridges gaps in our knowledge and contributes to developing environmental policy Mr Turnbull said. The Environmental Economics Research Hub will help provide world-class research by developing economic models and tools for environmental policy makers. It will apply leading edge economic principles and practices to environmental policy issues such as: designing marine reserves developing incentives and tools for improving water efficiency and developing policies for promoting environmental stewardship multi-species and ecosystem management for biodiversity and adapting to climate change.
