Content Inside: 1 NES 402/502 Economic History of the Islamic World Thursdays 4-6:30 Franklin 306 Dr. Leila Hudson lhudson@u.arizona.edu Office hours Wednesday 9:30-10:3 Bentley's House of Coffee and Tea 1730 E. Speedway or by appointment Introduction: This class will introduce students to the economic history and political economy of the Islamic world from the seventh century until the present day. The class will progress chronologically and themes to be covered include the relationship of Islam to economic life Islamic doctrines of business work land taxation; evolving world systems; patterns of trade agriculture and industry; states social movements and gender in relation to economics; as well as human capital media and the information economy and the present manifestations of globalization. Requirements: Attendance at each session is mandatory. Unexcused absences will result in grade decline. Students will prepare one 7-10 page research paper on the premodern period (20%) one 10-15 page research paper on a modern economy or topic (20%). There will be a take home essay midterm exam (20%) and a take home final (20%)l. Class participation will count for a final fifth of the grade. Students will submit a commentaryon the week's readings by email or webboard and give one formal presentation during the semester. Graduate students are required to use at least five primary historical sources in their papers. Readings will be available online through links to the webpage and on reserve for in house use in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (Franklin 202).
